Cultural and Folklore Club

On January 2010, a team consisted of young people founded the Cultural and Folklore Club of Didymoteicho “To Kastro” (“The Castle”). The purpose of the foundation is the preservation of the local culture and the spread of the traditional music and dances of Thrace. The willing of the Club’s members is to have cooperation with local authorities and other similar clubs, in order to exchange knowledge and to work together for the tradition of Thrace.

In our Club, there are two hundred (200) registered members. At the moment, there are three traditional dance classes for adults and two for minors. In the past, there were also classes for traditional music and one painting class, offering the citizens of Didymoteicho opportunities that didn’t exist before.

Every year, the Club prepares a music and dance performance with various elements from the Hellenic history and locals’ daily life. Until now the following musicals, theatricals and dance performances have taken place:
· "Evros deserted" (2010) [dealing with migration problem in the area]
· "Revival of the traditional marriage in Thrace" (2011)
· "Myth-Legend-History"(2011)[dealing with the conquest of Didymoteicho from Ottomans]
· "The epic of 1940" (2012) [dealing with the World War II in Greece]
· "New Hellas" (2013) [dealing with the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913]

The Club’s dance classes often take part in various cultural events all over Greece, indicatively in The Annual Dance Festival in Ammouliani Chalkidiki, in Chania, in Kalochori Salonica etc.

In 2013 the Club decided to expand its cultural actions beyond tradition. At Christmas 2013, six-day events were carried out, during which young and elder visitors were amused by taking part in various activities or by attending local Cultural and Folklore Clubs reviving traditional Christmas customs. Finally, with the same purpose, four-day events were carried out during 2014 carnivals.
